Redistricting
Redistricting is the process of redrawing the boundaries of election districts to ensure that the people of each district are equally represented. This process is done throughout many levels of government.
The County’s redistricting responsibilities are limited to:
- Once available, Carver County sends the newly-drawn State legislative and congressional redistricting plans to the Cities/Townships within Carver County. The Cities/Townships have 60 days to redraw or re-establish precinct boundaries and polling locations.
- The County Board of Commissioners establishes new commissioner districts once the Cities/Townships complete its redistricting duties. The Board must complete this work within 20 days once the Cities/Townships provide its new precinct boundaries and polling locations.
- Carver County updates voter registration records in the Statewide Voter Registration System to reflect the newly established districts and precinct boundaries. This ensures all voters cast ballots in their correct precinct. The Elections Department notifies voters impacted by redistricting by U.S. mail.
