Driver's License Information

Minnesota now offers Standard, Real ID, and Enhanced Driver's License and Identification Cards. More information and document requirements are available on the State of Minnesota Website.

Starting May 7, 2025, you will need a REAL ID, Enhanced Driver's License or ID, or passport book or card to board domestic flights or enter federal facilities. 

Class D knowledge test and Class D road test can be scheduled at drive.mn.gov or (651) 284-1234. 

Change of Name or Address: Service available at both the Chanhassen Service Center and Chaska License Center. Documentation must be provided to prove identity and/or residency when there is a change of name or address.

Exams: Class D knowledge and Class D road tests are only available by appointment at the Chaska Facility. The Drivers manuals can be accessed online.

Renewal: Service is available at both the Chanhassen and Chaska facilities. A vision test and photo will be taken during the renewal process. Applicants under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian or present an application containing a notarized signature of a parent or legal guardian.

To renew a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), you must complete a Self-Certification Form and bring your current Medical Examiner's Certificate along with any needed waivers. If this is your first CDL application, you will need to prove your citizenship by presenting one of the following documents along with the documents needed for renewal.

• Valid, unexpired U.S. passport or passport card
• Certified copy of birth certificate from any U.S. state
• Consular report of birth abroad issued by the U.S. Department of State
• Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of Citizenship issued by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security
• Valid unexpired Permanent Resident Card
• Unexpired employment authorization document issued by USCIS or an unexpired foreign passport accompanied by an approved I-94 form.  

Replacement of Driver's License: If your driver's license is lost or stolen you will need to complete an application for a duplicate. If the staff is able to access your photo and signature on the state website you will not be required to show identification. If they are unable to access this information, you would then need to show Proof of Identity. Proof of identity must be submitted when there is a change of name or address that accompanies the replacement application.  Applicants under 18 years of age must be accompanied by parent or legal guardian or present an application containing a notarized signature of parent or legal guardian. The fee for replacing a driver's license is $26.00.

State ID Card Information

In order to apply for a State Identification (ID) Card, you must present two forms of identity. (See Proof of Identity.)  A photo will be taken and included on the identification card. To receive a Reduced Fee Identification Card complete the Eligibility Verification for Reduced Fee ID Card Form.  

• The initial application/renewal fee is $35.50.
• The fee for senior citizens age 65+ is $32.00.
• The fee for a duplicate card is $26.00.
• The fee for the Reduced Fee ID Card is $0.50.
