What is the Proposed Tax Notice?
The Proposed Tax Notice indicates the anticipated property tax that you will pay the following year if your local jurisdictions approve the budget amounts they are considering. The Proposed Tax Notices are also called Truth in Taxation (TNT) Notices.
The purpose of the Proposed Tax Notice is to inform you of upcoming budget meetings being held by the City, School District, County, and Metro Special Taxing Districts (Met Council, Met Transit, and Mosquito Control). You are encouraged to attend these meetings so that you may gather information and voice your opinion before each authority sets their final levy.
A school district referendum passed at the November General Election. Is the increase reflected on this Proposed Tax Notice?
No. The Proposed Tax Notices are based on levies prior to the referendum election. The school district should provide the tax impact on your property. An updated notice will not be mailed.
Is there a meeting held to discuss the proposed budgets?
Counties, cities over 500 population, school districts, and metropolitan special taxing districts are required to hold a meeting at which the budget and levy will be discussed and the public allowed to speak. The dates and times of the meetings will be shown on your Proposed Tax Notice. If you are unable to attend the meeting, contact information is also included on the notice.
Can the amount of tax change from what is on my Proposed Tax Notice?
Yes. Here are some common reasons the amounts will differ:
Your Proposed Tax Notice does not include special assessments
Referendums could pass which will increase your tax
Taxing jurisdictions could lower their tax levy
Property owners could file for homestead classification
When will I receive my Proposed Tax Notice?
Notices are mailed after November 10th but no later than November 24th of each year.
