Individuals new to Carver County from a foreign country should connect with a local medical provider to establish a “medical home”. If you are new to Carver County and the United States, you may be eligible to receive a Refugee Health Assessment. A Refugee Health Assessment is designed to identify any health issues that may interfere with resettlement. The health assessment is personalized to the age, sex and region where the newcomer has arrived from (e.g., home country, refugee camp). The Refugee Health Assessment may include:

  • Testing for illnesses that are more common in some countries
  • Review of immunization and medical records
  • A general health exam
  • Renewal of medication prescriptions
  • Referral to medical specialists, as needed

Individuals eligible for the Refugee Health Assessment typically have public insurance (Medical Assistance), which covers the cost of the health assessment. If you are new to Carver County and United States, please work with Carver County Public Health to schedule a Refugee Health Assessment.
